48 Days: Income
Hello Everyone!
Today we are talking about income! That one of the reasons that we work, to make money. There isn't a whole lot to talk about today but let's get started.
One of the things people hate doing is negotiating their salary. They are scared of going too high or too low. If they go to high they think they might lose the opportunity because the employer will think you're crazy for asking that much. If you go to low you could lose out on the money they were willing to pay you. When you get to the point where you are discussing your salary they have already decided that they want you. If you make an offer that doesn't fit what they were thinking they will probably just tell you a different amount and you can debate about it from there. They won't give you up just because you made a bad offer, they should work with you to come to an agreement that works for both of you.
You shouldn't think about past salaries, experience, or degrees. This is a whole new job, what you did in the past doesn't matter. What matters is that you can do what you need to do at the new job and you will be paid fairly for it. If you made $20,000 at your old job, it doesn't mean you can't work an $80,000 position. It all depends on what you are doing now, not what you used to do.
1. Is negotiating on a price uncomfortable for you? Describe 3 things for which you negotiated the purchase price.
Yes, Even after learning all these things I still don't like the idea of talking about how much money I should make. I haven't had many opportunities to do this, but at a flea market I negotiated the price over a few things, I got a lower price for buying a couple things instead of them individually.
2. Have you negotiated your income in the past?
So far my jobs have had set hourly wages, you can negotiate a bit after you have been there awhile but it's highly unlikely they will give you more than your yearly raise.
3. Do you realize that in changing companies you may be able to increase your income by 40 to 50% though that is unlikely to happen while moving up in one company?
Yes, a company will only give you small increases over time but if you start at a new company you don't have any salary to go by so you can make much more.
4. What are the guidelines for how much is reasonable? What is fair? Is it always reasonable to ask for more?
There is a general guideline that companies go by, you should make the company 3-5 times more than your salary. You should know what your job is and about how much you should make for your job, you wouldn't ask to get paid a $100,000 salary if you worked at a fast food restaurant, unless you are management.
5. Read Matthew 20:1-15. How does this parable fit what you've learned?
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went.“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?“Because no one has hired us, they answered.“He said to them, You also go and work in my vineyard. “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. These who were hired last worked only one hour, they said, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day. “But he answered one of them, I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?
This goes along with what I have been talking about with previous conditions not effecting what you should make. You have to figure out what you will be happy making or else you might end up like the first workers and making the same as the people who came later.
6. What would you do if you tripled your current income? What could you offer that would merit that?
I would probably buy a house, get married, and do some other fun things. I'm not sure what the second part is saying?

48 Days: Interview
Hello everyone!
Once again, it has been awhile. There really hasn't been a lot to talk about. I was supposed to send out some resumes and stuff but I'm still trying to figure things out so I haven't done that yet. Right now the book is talking about interviews.
The first thing it talks about is how an interview is two sided, it is defined as "to see about each other." It is meant for both you and the interviewer to learn about each other and what you each do. You are there to find out information about the company and position and they are there to learn about you.
It then talks about the do's and don'ts of an interview. You should always prepare for interviews and have answers to common questions planned out. You shouldn't take more than a couple minutes answering a question. You should also avoid filler words. These are words like so, because, like, um, etc. They make you sound unprepared. You should also try to keep eye contact unless you are looking at your notes. You should also have your resume memorized so you can answer any question about it without looking. The most important time to make an impression is in the first 10 seconds. That is when most people make their decision, the rest of the interview is just to confirm their decision. You should look good, walk in confident and give a firm handshake. If you can't make a good impression when they first meet you, your chances drop greatly no matter how good you would be for the job.
Also I still need to find a millionaire, so if you know one or know of one let me know!
1. Can you clearly and easily describe your strongest areas of competence?
Not really, if I gave it a lot of thought I could come up with some things but just off the top of my head I couldn't.
2. Does knowing that interviewing means "to see about each other" make it more comfortable to ask for information about the company and the position?
It does, but the problem I usually have is that I find out all the information I wanted to know before I have to ask. It will help though if I do need to ask about something.
3. Are you aware of any personal habits or annoying filler words that may be part of your personal presentation?
The only thing I can think of is umm and hmm, I use those when I am thinking, I also end sentences in so sometimes.
4. Is your level of enthusiasm contagious?
I wouldn't think so because I'm very quiet. Even if i am excited about something people might not notice. It really depends on the situation and people.
5. What are some unusual questions you know of that have been asked of you or others in an interview situation?
What is your opinion of Franklin high school? I was asked that at an interview after they found out I went to Belmont.
6. How can you be humble and godly and still show confidence?
This is a tricky one for me, because I hate to show off and make myself look good. I would say you just have to tell them your strengths without being too pushy about how great you are, just enough to show that you know what you are doing.
7. Would you ever take a position even if you knew it was not a good fit for you?
It really depends on the position. Generally, I would say no, but if there was an opportunity to move into one you want or it was similar to something you want then I probably would.

48 Days: Search
Hello Everyone!
It's been awhile but I've been busy lately. I have been trying my best to keep up with this and I've been doing pretty good but haven't had time to blog about it. So let's get started!
The book has been talking about job search techniques and how looking in the paper or job sites are the worst way to find a job. The best way is to find a company that you like and contact people that have the power to hire you. You keep contacting them but not an annoying amount, once a week until you get an interview with them or they tell you to stop. The next best way is to use friends and family to get you into the company they work for. They know about jobs before anyone else, most jobs are open to current employees before they offer it to the public.
He has also been giving more tips on resumes and cover letters. I will post mine on here soon once I get it finished. It is hard coming up with all the things you are good at. There are a lot of things you don't think of like problem solving, people skills, and some other areas you don't really think of for putting on a resume. Well now for questions!
1. Are some job markets more secure than others?
Some are more secure but doesn't mean it is a better job. I can't see fast food places closing any time soon and they are always hiring, that doesn't mean you want to work there for the rest of your life. There are many job markets that will be secure but they are usually factory and production type work. Most of the office and technology jobs are always changing. This doesn't mean there bad to work for, it just means you need to be ready for constant change. This all really depends on a lot of factors too, everything is changing so it's hard to say what will be stable and what won't.
2. What are the best places to look for new opportunities in today's workplace.
The best place to find work is through t the company itself. You should find the companies that you would want to work for. Then you should write, email, and call someone with the power to hire you there. If they like you enough they will hire you even if they were not looking for someone at the time.
3. What are the biggest mistakes you've made in the past in looking for positions?
I would say how I have been looking for them in general. I look at job sites and only pick the ones that say I can do. Job sites are almost useless, unless you catch the ad right when it comes out you don't really stand a chance and even if you do your chances are very small.
4. How do you feel about "promoting" yourself?
I hate doing this! Even though I know it's good and what you are supposed to do when looking for a job, it still seems like I'm trying to brag about myself.
5. How do you know when to change jobs or careers?
There are a lot of reasons why you would need to change. If you have hit a dead end in the job, you either want a higher position or a raise but they won't give it to you. You may want a higher level job that company doesn't offer. You may also not like the people or environment that you work in.
6. How should we apply the principles found in Colossians 3:23-24 as workers in this day and time?
Well I will be nice and post the verse so you don't have to look it up! Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
You should look at you're work not as I have to do this to make money but instead as I'm doing this work for God. That might sound a bit strange but try to think of it as your doing it in a way to improve the world and show his love. That also sounds kind of confusing but it is hard to explain. Say you work at McDonalds, you do your job the best you can and do it for God then you will make everyone around you happier and God will be pleased that you are doing your best even if it isn't the best job. That still really doesn't explain it but hopefully you get the idea.

48 Days: Jobs
Hello Everyone!
The last few days I've had to think about jobs and skills and things like that. It also talked about resumes. It explained how to write a better resume and how to use certain words to make things sound better. Instead of a cashier you can be a customer service and sales representative, it's pretty much what you are but it sounds better on a resume. As I said before my main problem is coming up with the things I like to do and match them with jobs. I have come up with a few ideas but I'm not sure how to make any of them work. I will talk about one of them after the questions.
1. Do you understand your areas of competence?
Yes, It's just thinking of them off the top of my head. If someone asked me can you do this I would know, It's just trying to think of them that I have a problem with.
2. Do you feel trapped because of your current or past work experience?
I don't feel trapped from the work I have done, it's more the lack of work. Everything I look at asked for work experience and I don't have any in the fields I would want to move into. There aren't a lot of entry level jobs in the areas that I like. Although there may be more if I know how to find them, which he will talk about in a chapter or two.
3. Do you recognize how easily your abilities may transfer to a new industry or profession?
Many of the basic skills I have can transfer anywhere. I have customer service skills from working at vista and those are skills that can be used at any job. Even if you don't deal with customers they can help you deal with people in general.
4. Can you see value in those things you may have done as a volunteer through your church or community?
Yes, There have been many experiences from youth group and Boy Scouts that I have taken something from. When helping out around the community you also pick up skills from the work you are doing or you could learn something from the people you are working with.
5. Are there skills or training you need to make you a candidate for the work you love?
I think business training would help me the most. I really don't know how business work or the laws and rules around them.
6. Has God given you abilities that do not match your desires? If you how can you reconcile those?
There are probably a bunch of abilities that I have that I wouldn't use for work. They are good for the rest of life. It's always good to have a lot of skills even if there not ones you use often. Maybe your a good mechanic but you don't want to be one. If your or a friend's car breaks then you would probably be able to fix it. Just because a skill doesn't relate to work doesn't mean it's useless.
I recently started playing airsoft and I really enjoy playing it. A few days ago I came up with the idea of starting an airsoft field. I have been thinking about how it would all work, things I could do, prices for things. The only problem is money. I would have to buy the land, then build some buildings, supplies for the field, buying rental guns, and some other things. As you can see that would add up to a decent amount of money, money I don't have. This is one of the first ideas I have gotten really excited about and it's kind of sad to see that it's not possible right now due to money. That dosen't mean I am giving up on the idea, I still REALLY want to do this, I just need to find a way. I made a poll on facebook, if everyone would vote on it that would be great! 48 Days: Me
Hello everyone!
The last few days I haven't had anything to really write about. Today I have questions and they have all the things I have had to think about the last few days. The book seems to have slowed down a lot, it's mostly been think about this, or how are you in this type of situation.
1. In what kind of settings are you most comfortable?
I like working alone or with a few people that I like being around. For social things, I like small parties/cookouts where people just relax eat food and talk. I generally like calm places where you can think and nothing crazy is going on.
2. How do you respond to management?
I am pretty good with management, I'm good at following directions, and unless it's something crazy, I can do what I'm told. I might be a bit mad but it usually doesn't really get to me.
3. How would you manage people?
I would be pretty easy with them. If they get all their work done and the customers are happy then they can do it how they like and at the speed they like. If the job gets done and there aren't any problems then they can do it how they like.
4. Are you better working with people, things, or ideas?
I'm better with things and ideas. I would say I'm best with things because I can never figure out my ideas. I can never come up with a decision or I go too far with them. I'm not really a people person, I can work with people but I would rather keep it to a minimum.
5. Are you more analytical, detailed, and logical, or are you one to see the big picture and respond with emotion and enthusiasm?
I am usually analytical, detailed, and logical. I like to think things out before I do them. I want to know how everything is going to go and what needs to be done before I actually start doing something. If I get really excited about something then sometimes I will just go for it without thinking much first, which usually turns out bad.
6. Are you steady and predictable, or do you seek variety and new challenge?
I'm a little bit of both. I am usually steady and predictable but I always like to try something new if it's something I think I would like. I also really like variety, that's one of the reasons I don't like being a cashier, I just stand there doing the same thing over and over again.
7. Are you verbal and persuasive, or are you the caring, empathetic listener?
I am the caring empathetic listener. I like to listen more that I like to talk. I usually only talk if I'm asked a question or it's something I really want to talk about. I would rather just listen and throw in some things here and there.
8. What strengths have others noticed in you?
The first one that I can think of is that I'm patient. I don't mind having to wait as long as I'm not running late for something, I hate being late. I'm good at solving problems, I'm good at finding out how to figure things out. I might not know how to do it but I can find how you are supposed to do it. People have also said I'm helpfully. Unless I'm really busy with something I will attempt to help almost anyone.
9. What are 5 words or phrases that describe you?
I don't like doing things like this, but here we go. Creative, Patient, Calm, Happy, Nice.
10. In writing your epitaph, what would you want people to remember about you?
Well if I knew what a epitaph was I would tell you, google time! Now that I know what it is I guess I would want it to say something about being a helpful and kind person. That's something hard to come up with. It could also be something funny, Mel Blanc's was "That's all folks!" he did the voice of Bugs Bunny and many other cartoons.

Today the book talked about the three things that shape you as a person and how you do things. The three things are skills and abilities, personality tendencies, and values, dreams, and passions.
Skills and abilities are the things you can do. This is anything you have knowledge of and the ability to do. On average when you are 30 you will have around 200 things you have the ability to do. Just because you have the skills to do something doesn't mean you should do that as your job. You can have the skills to cook but that doesn't mean you should be a chef.
Personality tendencies are they ways you act, think, and interact with the world. They are divided up into four groups and almost everyone can strongly relate to one of the groups.
Dominance (Lion/Eagle) - Takes charge, likes power and authority, confident, very direct, bold, determined, competitive.
Influencing (Otter/Peacock) - Good talkers, outgoing, fun-loving, impulsive, creative, energetic, optimistic, variety-seeking, promoter.
Steadiness (Golden Retriever/Dove) - Loyal, good listener, calm, enjoys routine, sympathetic, patient, understanding, reliable, avoids conflict.
Compliance (Beaver/Owl) - Loves detail, very logical, diplomatic, factual, deliberate, controlled, inquisitive, predictable, resistant to change.
I would say that I fit mostly under steadiness. I think I fit with most the traits under that category. Second closest would be compliance. There are a few traits that I think fit me in this category but not as many as Steadiness. I have a bit of influencing too but not enough for it really to count, and I don't really have anything from dominance.
Values, Dreams, and passions are all of the things you want out of life. Many people push these out of the way thinking they will never happen. You should be doing the opposite, you should be trying to work towards your dreams. There is a reason they are your dreams and passions, it's the things that you want to do so why would you try to avoid them.
The tricky part is now combining these three areas and fining what all works together for you. Everyone is unique so there is no easy way to figure out what you are supposed to do. There are many paths to take you just need to find what you like best. You could have a dream of working with art but you're not a very talented artist. If you are dominate then you could possibly open an art museum or work in management at one, or if you influential then you could be a museum guide or a promoter for an artist. You just have to look at all the possibilities. There may be a job that you would love doing that you wouldn't even think would work with what you want to do. If you want to work at a restaurant but don't want to be a cook then you could be a manager, waiter, greeter, promoter, and probably 10 other jobs that I don't even know about. You need to see what your dreams are then what skills you have fit those dreams then look at your personality and see what job would fit all of those. Everyone is going to come up with something different.
If this post seems crazy and weird, it is because I was lazy and waited until after midnight to do it. I guess I would say I am almost sleep blogging. If anyone has any questions or wants me to explain something better just let me know in the comments.
This might seem kind of strange, but I need to find a millionaire. I have some time to find one but I figured I should start looking. On day 47 I have to take a millionaire out to lunch. If anyone happens to know any millionaires I would like to know!
